A PANEL DISCUSSION
Sunday January 8, 2023
10am-12pm
From
the world of dyadic parent-child psychotherapy, Dan Stern’s
concept of “ports of entry” (Stern, 1995) is a valuable
framework for case conceptualization and treatment planning with
a focus on interactional and representational experiences of the
parent, child and therapist.
In
this workshop, we will discuss several “ports of entry” for
clinicians treating children of different ages, from the
tradition of infant mental health principles, including D.W.
Winnicott’s oft-quoted notion that “there is no such thing as an
infant [independent of the primary caregiving relationship].”
Using a live (and lively!) supervision model, our panelists will
reflect on and respond to clinical case material primarily
through three proposed “ports”: the child’s emotional regulation
and body awareness; the child’s play; and the primary
caregiver’s psychology. These “ports of entry” can influence our
thinking and our interventions, while underscoring the inherent
complexity in supporting children within their family systems
and broader social embeddedness.
