a 3 hour Continuing Education
Course for Social Workers
Sunday January 6, 2019
10am-1pm
Brooklyn Learning Center, 147 Lincoln Place,
Brooklyn, NY 11217
This workshop will provide an
overview of how to traverse the landscape of gender identity and
sexual expression in 2019. We will address the sometimes
confusing language and terminology of gender and sexuality as
well as issues such as whether gender is binary or fluid.
How does
gender identity develop?
Are there
differences between body dysmorphic and gender identity
disorder. We will discuss issues related to being transgender
and transitioning.
We will be
talking about ways to help children and parents speak about
gender expression and sexual orientation, how to help
adolescents "come out" to their parents and others, and how to
help children and adolescents deal with bullying that frequently
accompanies being “different.”
Participants
will have an opportunity to examine their own personal biases
and stereotypes in regard to these topics and we will discuss
ways to promote healthy development and relationships with
children and parents.
Participants will be able to:
-
Give 2
examples of gender identities that are being explored openly
by children and teens today.
-
Discuss how
sexual orientation is named (e.g., If a cisgender male teen
has sex with another male what is his sexual orientation?)
-
Understand
the developmental line for feelings of difference related to
gender and sexual object choice?
-
Describe how we identify and discuss the pros and cons of
puberty blocking hormones, and under what circumstances and
at what age should they be administered.
